Cambodia’s Most Beautiful Islands

Not yet on every tourist’s radar, the Cambodian islands are yet to be commercialised and ruined by mass tourism. On them you’ll find pristine beaches, turquoise waters and barely a soul around. If this sounds like your kind of paradise, then read on. Many of the islands have jungle-clad interiors meaning that when there are roads on the island, they’re often too dangerous to drive so the only way to get around is by boat or by foot.  Combine that with little wifi and no ATM’s, these islands are your answer to getting completely off the grid.

Koh Rong
Don’t be deterred by Koh Rong’s reputation as a party island, as apart from the main pier I promise you there is no party in sight. Koh Rong is definitely the most beautiful of all the islands I visited with crystal clear waters and white sand beaches which go on for miles. I would highly recommend staying on Long Beach or Coconut Beach for the ultimate island escape.

Koh Rong Samloem
Koh Rong Samloem is Koh Rong’s little sister: smaller in size and in reputation. The four main beaches on the island all offer completely different atmospheres. Saracen Bay is a stretch of turquoise blue waters and white sands dotted with luxury accommodation and expensive restaurants. Sunset Beach is nestled within a cove and is peppered with relaxed beach bars with sand underfoot and tree house bungalows. Its crystalline waters and chilled atmosphere scored Lazy Beach a place on National Geographic’s list of the 21 Best Beaches in the World. Need I say more? The final beach M'Pai Bei is a taste of local life buzzing with Cambodians and expats alike. I wouldn’t recommend staying at M'Pai Bei as the beach isn’t particularly inviting, it's noisy and the sand is littered with rubbish.

Rabbit Island
There is something about Rabbit Island which makes it utterly enchanting. It’s interior is jungle-clad and palm-tree dotted. There is no luxury accommodation on the island and much of the accommodation cannot be booked beforehand. I stayed in a private beach bungalow which cost only $5 a night. As basic as it might have been, I can’t think of many places in the world offering a stilted bungalow with sea views for such a reasonable price. With little to do on the island other than sunbathe, this is the place to come to zen out.
