Even if hiking isn’t your favourite activity, each of these hikes is crucial to unfolding the culture and beauty of Sri Lanka. With each hike, you’ll unlock a piece of the country’s history, culture and religion as well as witnessing beautiful views.

 

Sri Lanka

Ella rock
Trekking through Sri Lanka’s tea plantations is something every visitor should experience. The tea country experiences a much cooler climate making it ideal for physical exercise. The hike to Ella Rock starts along the railway track and then passes through beautiful tea plantations. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be greeted with insane views over the mountainous and verdant countryside. The hike takes 4 hours round trip.

Little Adam’s Peak
This trail is more of a gentle walk than an arduous hike but it’s a beautiful way to get a glimpse of the tea country. The path passes through beautifully manicured tea bushes and the view at the top overlooks the lush landscape. The hike takes 2 hours round trip.

Sigiriya rock
If there is one hike you must do in Sri Lanka, it is Sigiriya Rock. This ancient rock fortress is Sri Lanka’s most iconic sight. Formerly the King’s royal palace, now only crumbling ruins remain on top of this rock, but their historical importance still live on today. The hike takes 2 hours round trip.

Pidurangala rock
Whilst this rock might lack the historical significance of Sigiriya rock, it’s the best rock to climb for iconic views over Sigiriya rock. The hike isn’t a long one, but it's steep enough to make you break a sweat. The view at the top will take your breath away as you witness Sigiriya rock majestically soaring over the dense forest. The hike takes 1 hour round trip.

Adam’s Peak
Adam’s Peak is a pilgrimage which Sri Lankans set off on throughout the year, but particularly so during national holidays. The peak is thought to be the Sacred Footprint of the Buddha as he went towards paradise. There are over 5,500 steps to climb to reach the summit, but the incredible views and religious significance make it worthwhile. The hikes takes about 5 hours round trip.
